Some wines are made because the vintage calls for it. This one was made for Sherman.
In 2022, after losing our longtime president and co-founder, Sherman Smoot, we found ourselves holding onto everything he had said he wanted to do—whether it had been part of a plan or simply mentioned in passing. If Sherman had talked about it, we were going to make it happen.
And one of those things was another Reserve Zinfandel.
The last Bella Luna Reserve Zinfandel was produced in 2013, making this an incredibly rare wine for us. For the 2022 vintage, we selected fruit from our favorite blocks at Bailey Ranch in the Adelaida District, choosing the lots we felt were worthy of carrying the Reserve name—and Sherman's story.
The wine was aged for three years in French oak puncheons before bottling, allowing it the time and patience a wine like this deserved.
Only 75 cases were produced.
And, because there really could only be one price for this wine: $86—Sherman's race plane number.
